The travel and tourism industry has been hit hard by the pandemic, with borders closing and travel restrictions resulting in the level of tourism plummeting. However, as we start to see signs of recovery, it is crucial that we look ahead and are all working together, across govt and business, on rebuilding and regenerating the industry.
The importance and relevance of the industry is sometimes overlooked by some governments and wider society. The industry is among the most important revenue generators worldwide comprised of many sectors including hospitality, aviation, land transport, cruises, retail, restaurants, and travel agencies, but is also a driver of supply chain sectors.
We are honoured to be joined by industry leaders to discuss the current state of travel and tourism, and how to rebuild it in the post-pandemic world. The discussion will focus on the challenges and opportunities facing Scotland and Asia, with a focus on the ways in which these two regions can work together to rebuild and grow their travel and tourism industries.

Martin Barrow CBE GBSFormer Chairman of Hong Kong TourismMartin spent 35 years in East Asia (Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand) with the Jardine Matheson Group (which has strong Scottish ancestry!). He was Chairman of Hong Kong Tourism for 8 years and has been an Honorary Tourism Ambassador for Japan.

Marc Crothall MBEChief Executive Officer of The Scottish Tourism Alliance
Marc is 60 years young, prior to being appointed in May 2012 as the first CEO of The Scottish Tourism Alliance (STA) he held many senior executive positions in the hotel, leisure and events industry both in the UK and abroad. He co-chairs Scotland’s Tourism and Hospitality Leadership Group (THILG) with Scotland’s Tourism Minister Ivan Mckee. The group being responsible for Scotland’s national tourism strategy Scotland Outlook 2030. Marc also chairs the National Food Tourism Leadership Board and is a board member of Apprenticeship in Hospitality Scotland Interface and an advisory board member of Springboard (Scotland) and TravelTech Scotland
Marc was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Birthday Honours for services to the Tourism industry in Scotland and in 2020 was awarded the “Fellowship” by the Scottish Hotel industry for his outstanding contribution to the industry.

Gordon DewarChief Executive, Edinburgh Airport Limited
Gordon took up the post of Chief Executive in July 2012, with the airport experiencing 63% growth in passengers from 9m to 14.7m passengers in 2019 – a record for any Scottish airport.
Previously, Gordon spent 2 years as Chief Executive at Bahrain International Airport creating an independent and profitable business for the first time after a carve out from Government. He then spent 4 years with BAA running Glasgow and Edinburgh airports through periods of extensive investments in terminal capacity and passenger growth from 2007 to 2010.

Hazel SellarMarket Development Manager for the Asia Pacific and Middle East - Visit Scotland
Hazel is Market Development Manager for the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions at VisitScotland. She has been working in tourism for the past 5 years with a focus on raising Scotland’s profile as a visitor destination in China. Before that, she lived and worked in China for 5 years.

Russell DalgleishBoard of Director, Asia Scotland Institute; Founder, Scottish Business Network
Russell is the founding Managing Partner of the advisory group, Exolta Capital Partners, and Founding Chair of Scottish Business Network, the global network supporting Scottish business leaders and entrepreneurs to achieve international success.
He has enjoyed the benefits of a highly successful international career in the technology sector and now focuses his efforts on supporting owners and boards of companies to devise and implement international growth strategies. In his earlier career he has held board leadership positions with international companies achieving turnover in excess off £200m.
Core areas of focus are Leadership, Innovation and Entrepreneurship working primarily with Scaleups. He is a regular speaker and conference host and has spoken at conferences from Los Angeles to Abu Dhabi.
