Biography

Lord Charles Bruce is active in the not-for-profit sector in conservation, the fine arts, and multiculturalism. He manages a family estate in Fife as a sustainable rural business centred on Broomhall House, a leading travel destination and events venue. He chairs the Kolkata Scottish Heritage Trust. He is president of the Democracy Forum, which hosts regular seminars in London on human rights and political authority in several Asian countries. He is patron of the Japan Society of Scotland. He has also hosted events at Broomhall on behalf of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Consulate.

Educated at the universities of St Andrews and Dundee, he studied Economic History and Sustainable Urban Design. He is on the advisory council of the International Academic Forum (IAFOR) – based in Osaka – and has lectured widely on the history of Scottish relations with Japan. He is deputy chair of the Scottish Centre of Tagore Studies. He contributes to Gitanjali and Beyond, a journal published in Scotland and India focussing on the global legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, India’s first writer to win the Nobel Prize.
